Subway tile has a classic rectangular shape and, by tradition, measures 3 inches by 6 inches, making it a clean, simple, and timeless design. Once you have placed all of your tiles, you can allow it to dry for a minimum of 24 hours, grout over that, and wipe off the excess with a damp sponge; let it cure completely. For added protection, add grout sealer, especially around moisture-prone areas.

The appropriate trowel size for subway tiles varies with the dimensions of the tiles and the required surface quality. A standard-sized subway tile of 3x6 inches requires a trowel size of 1/4-inch x 1/4-inch square notch for optimal bonding with even coverage of adhesive on the tile surface itself.

If one uses larger subway tiles in the size of 4x8 inches, 4x12 inches, or 6x12 inches, then the proper trowel must be any one having 1/4-inch x 3/8-inch square notch to achieve good adherence. A V-notch trowel of 3/16-inch is the best for the mosaic or small subway tiles. Choosing the right one is very important because it allows for perfect mortar coverage and tile adherence.
