About Mosaic Tile

Mosaic tile puts small pieces on mesh-mounted sheets, turning complex patterns into an installation no harder than setting field tile. With more than 1,000 mosaics in marble, glass, porcelain and mixed materials, this is Mosaicenter's signature category: hexagons, herringbone, chevron, basketweave, mini subway and octagon and dot patterns, sold by the sheet with per-square-foot pricing.

Types of Mosaic Patterns

Hexagon

The most versatile geometry in tile: vintage in white marble, contemporary in matte porcelain. Available in 1, 2 and 3 inch faces.

Herringbone and Chevron

Directional patterns that add movement and craft to backsplashes and shower walls, cut from marble, glass and stone blends.

Basketweave and Octagon-Dot

Tailored, classic rhythms built from two-tone marble combinations, at home in traditional and transitional baths.

Penny and Specialty Rounds

Dots, scallops and fishscale sheets that soften hard-edged rooms, classics in baths, spas and pools.

Mosaic Tile Materials

Marble Mosaics

Carrara, Thassos, Calacatta and Emperador cut into every pattern above. Real veining at mosaic scale; seal at installation.

Glass Mosaics

Zero water absorption and fused color make glass mosaics the standard for pools and the brightest choice for backsplashes.

Porcelain and Ceramic

Printed and glazed mosaics deliver pattern with no sealing and easy care, ideal for floors that need grip.

Mixed Material

Stone, glass and metal chips in one sheet tie together the finishes already in your room, from countertop to hardware.

Best Applications for Mosaic Tile

Shower Floors

The small pieces of a mosaic sheet follow the slope to the drain, and the dense grout lines act as built-in slip resistance. This is why mosaics are the standard specification for shower pans.

Backsplashes

A mosaic backsplash concentrates pattern where you see it most and wipes clean behind the range. Sheets cut easily around outlets and cabinets.

Feature Strips and Niches

A single row of mosaic inside a niche or as a wainscot cap costs little and reads as custom work. Wall mosaics wrap curves that large tile cannot.

Pools and Water Features

Glass and porcelain mosaic sheets are the classic pool finish: small pieces follow curved walls and steps, and the materials shrug off water and chemistry.

Installation Tips for Mosaic Sheets

Bright White Thinset

Glass and light stone chips can show the setting bed. Always set mosaics in bright white thinset with full coverage.

Grout Changes Everything

Matching grout blends the sheet into one texture; contrasting grout draws the pattern. Sample both before committing.

Plan the Cuts

Sheets trim with snips between chips. Center the pattern on the wall's focal point and push cut edges into corners.

Blend the Seams

Offset sheet edges and mix sheets from several boxes so the grid between sheets never telegraphs.

FAQs about Mosaic Tiles

Are mosaic tiles good for shower floors?

Yes, they are the standard choice. The small pieces follow the floor's slope to the drain, and the many grout lines add slip resistance underfoot. Choose stone or matte-finish mosaics for the most grip, and seal stone varieties.

How are mosaic tiles sold?

By the sheet. Each sheet is a mesh-mounted square roughly one square foot in coverage; the exact coverage is listed on every product page, and the calculator converts your square footage into sheets automatically.

Do I need special installation for mosaics?

Two details matter: use bright white thinset so the setting bed cannot shadow through glass or light stone, and use a flat trowel technique that keeps mortar out of the joints. Otherwise mosaics install like any tile.

Which mosaic material should I choose?

Match the material to the room. Glass is unbeatable in pools and bright backsplashes, marble brings real veining to baths, porcelain gives no-maintenance pattern for floors, and mixed-material sheets tie multiple finishes together.

Can I mix mosaic patterns in one room?

Yes, with one rule: keep a shared color family. A herringbone field with a hexagon shower floor works when both draw from the same whites and greys. Let one pattern dominate and use the second as an accent.
