About Large Format Tile

Large format means fewer joints and more surface: tiles from 24 x 24 up through 48 x 48 and plank formats that lay near-seamless planes of stone, concrete and marble looks. Mosaicenter's large-format range centers on vitrified porcelain in the biggest sizes the porcelain collection carries, with floor-rated and wall-ready applications and the marble-look faces that made big tile famous.

Why Go Big

Fewer Grout Lines

A 24 x 48 floor has a fraction of the joints of 12 x 12: less maintenance, less visual noise, more surface.

Rooms Feel Larger

Uninterrupted planes read expansive; small rooms especially gain from fewer lines cutting the floor.

Modern by Default

The large-format look is the visual language of contemporary architecture, from lobbies to spa baths.

Stone Without Slabs

Marble-look and stone-look faces at 48 inches deliver slab presence at tile logistics and price.

Best Applications for Large Format Tile

Open-Plan Floors

One format flowing from kitchen through living areas unifies the plan and multiplies the perceived footage; matte porcelain takes the traffic.

Shower and Feature Walls

Two or three large panels wrap a shower with almost no joints, the cleanest wet-wall look tile can produce.

Small Rooms, Big Effect

Counterintuitive and true: fewer lines make powder rooms and entries feel bigger. Match grout to tile and the floor reads monolithic.

Commercial Spaces

Lobbies, restaurants and retail run large format for its wear ratings and its calm, premium ground plane.

Large Format vs. Standard Tile

FeatureLarge FormatStandard 12 x 12
Grout jointsFew; 1/8-inch on rectified edgesMany; the grid dominates
Substrate prepMust be flat; leveling firstForgives minor dips
Setting methodBack-buttered, leveling clips, two installersStandard trowel work
Room effectExpansive, seamless, modernBusy, traditional grid
MaintenanceMinimal joints to keep cleanMore grout to scrub and seal

Installation and Care

Rectified Edges

Large-format porcelain is machine-squared for tight joints; confirm rectified spec when planning minimal grout.

The Right Trowel

Deep-notch and back-butter: coverage standards rise with tile size, and hollow spots become cracks.

Plan the Cuts

Fewer tiles means every cut shows; lay out so cut edges land under cabinets and at the room's quiet sides.

Easy Living After

Once down, large format is the easiest floor in the house: few joints, non-porous faces, a mop and done.

The living room is the architectural heartbeat of your home. We curate our collections to balance breathtaking luxury with unbreakable, everyday durability.

Whether you are gathering with family or entertaining guests, our large-format porcelains and rich natural stones provide an impeccable foundation. By insisting on precision-rectified edges and premium glazes, we ensure your living space feels expansive, seamless, and effortlessly sophisticated for decades.

FAQs about Large Format Tiles

What counts as large format tile?

Industry practice calls anything with one side over 15 inches large format; in this collection that means 24 x 24, 24 x 48, 48 x 48 and long plank sizes. The bigger the face, the fewer the joints and the flatter the substrate must be.

Does large format tile make a small room look bigger?

Yes, reliably: fewer grout lines mean fewer interruptions, and with grout matched to the tile the floor reads as one plane. Small bathrooms and entries benefit the most, the opposite of the old small-room-small-tile rule.

Is large format tile harder to install?

It is less forgiving rather than harder: the substrate must be flat, mortar coverage complete, and handling is a two-person job with suction cups and a leveling system. Experienced installers treat these as routine requirements.

Can large format tile go on shower walls?

Beautifully: two or three panels can wrap a shower with minimal joints. Ensure proper waterproofing behind, non-sag mortar rated for heavy tile, and mechanical support while curing. Floors of showers usually stay mosaic or textured.

Why are grout lines so thin on large format installations?

Rectified edges: the tiles are precision-squared after firing, allowing 1/8-inch joints. Thin joints complete the seamless effect but demand the flatness and leveling discipline that define quality large-format work.
