About Slate Tile

Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic stone that splits into layered sheets, giving every tile its cleft texture and deep mineral color. Color runs through the full body of the stone, so wear never exposes a different tone. Mosaicenter's slate range spans gauged floor tile from 12 x 12 to 24 x 24, slate subway and hexagon mosaics, plus stacked-stone ledger panels that turn fireplaces and facades into textured focal points.

Slate Characteristics

Natural Grip

The cleft face is slate's built-in slip resistance, which made it the traditional choice for entries, mudrooms and patios long before slip ratings existed.

Through-Body Color

Charcoal, rust, green and multicolor blends run through the stone itself. Chips and wear reveal the same color, not a different body.

Gauged Backs

Our floor slate is gauged: machined flat on the back for even thickness and easier setting than raw-split stone.

Indoor-Outdoor Continuity

The same slate can run from hearth to patio, connecting interior floors with outdoor living in one material.

Best Applications for Slate Tile

Entries and Mudrooms

Slate shrugs off boots, grit and dripping umbrellas while its texture keeps footing sure. A slate entry floor hides winter's worst until you get to the mop.

Fireplace Surrounds and Feature Walls

Stacked ledger panels build dimensional stone walls with no visible grout. The cleft shadow lines give depth that flat tile cannot fake.

Backsplashes with Texture

A slate backsplash brings matte mineral texture behind open shelving and pairs naturally with butcher block and iron.

Patios and Outdoor Steps

Exterior-rated slate carries its grip and through-body color outside, where its texture earns its keep on steps and walkways in every season.

Installation and Care

Choose Your Sealer Finish

An enhancing sealer deepens slate to its wet color; a natural-look sealer keeps the dry matte. Test both on a spare tile before committing.

Expect First-Year Flaking

Some slates shed fine layers as fresh cleft faces settle. This spalling is cosmetic, stops with wear, and sweeps away.

Mind the Thickness

Cleft stone varies in thickness tile to tile. Set with a medium-bed mortar and level as you go for a floor that feels seamless underfoot.

Sweep the Texture

Cleft faces collect grit in their shadows; regular sweeping keeps the surface clean and the grip honest.

FAQs about Slate Tiles

Is slate tile slippery?

Less than almost any polished surface. The natural cleft face provides real texture underfoot, which is why slate has always served entries, mudrooms and outdoor steps. Honed slate is smoother, so keep cleft finishes where grip matters.

Does slate need to be sealed?

Yes. Seal at installation with either a natural-look or color-enhancing penetrating sealer, and re-seal roughly yearly in high-traffic or outdoor areas. The sealer guards against oil staining and makes routine cleaning easier.

Why is my new slate floor flaking?

Fresh cleft slate often sheds thin surface layers during its first months as loose laminations release. This spalling is normal and cosmetic; sweep it away and it settles with wear. Persistent deep flaking usually signals a moisture issue worth checking.

Can slate be used outdoors?

Many slates handle exterior use well, resisting freeze-thaw where properly installed and drained. Its texture makes it a natural for patios and steps. Confirm the specific product's exterior rating on its page.

What colors does slate come in?

Slate's mineral chemistry produces charcoal and grey-black, rust and copper, sage green and famous multicolor blends where all of these meet in one tile. Because color is through-body, it never wears to a different shade.
