Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic stone that splits into layered sheets, giving every tile its cleft texture and deep mineral color. Color runs through the full body of the stone, so wear never exposes a different tone. Does slate need to be sealed?

Yes. Seal at installation with either a natural-look or color-enhancing penetrating sealer, and re-seal roughly yearly in high-traffic or outdoor areas. The sealer guards against oil staining and makes routine cleaning easier.

Why is my new slate floor flaking?

Fresh cleft slate often sheds thin surface layers during its first months as loose laminations release. This spalling is normal and cosmetic; sweep it away and it settles with wear. Persistent deep flaking usually signals a moisture issue worth checking.
