About Porcelain Tile

Porcelain tile is fired at roughly 1,200 degrees Celsius until it absorbs less than 0.5 percent of its weight in water, the vitrification threshold set by ASTM C373. That density is why porcelain handles pool decks, showers and commercial floors without sealing. Mosaicenter stocks over 1,000 porcelain tiles, from bright whites and warm beiges to dramatic blacks, in formats from 2 x 2 mosaics to statement 48 x 48 slabs, most rated PEI 4 or 5 for heavy traffic.

Types of Porcelain Finishes

Matte

A calm, contemporary face with natural grip that hides smudges and wear. The default choice for floors, from kitchens to entries.

Polished

A light-reflecting sheen that reads like honed stone. Beautiful on walls, shower surrounds and low-traffic floors.

Grip R11

A textured, slip-rated surface engineered for wet and outdoor areas: pool surrounds, exterior steps and ramps.

Glossy

A bright glazed face for walls and backsplashes that bounces light around smaller rooms.

Porcelain Sizes and Formats

Large-format porcelain in 24 x 48 and 48 x 48 lays near-seamless floors with a fraction of the grout lines, while 12 x 24 remains the versatile workhorse for floors and walls alike. At the other end of the scale, porcelain mosaics and hexagon formats bend around shower floors and niches. For outdoor living, 2cm Arterra porcelain pavers bring the same zero-maintenance surface to patios and pool decks.

Porcelain Colors

Whites and Creams

White porcelain runs from arctic solids to stone-look fields with soft mineral movement, the brightest base a floor can have.

Greys

Grey porcelain spans pale concrete looks to deep charcoal, the backbone of modern minimal interiors.

Beige and Brown

Warm beige and brown tones carry travertine and wood looks without the upkeep of the real material.

Bold Colors

From blues to blacks, saturated porcelain turns floors and feature walls into the design statement.

PEI Ratings and Durability

PEI ratings grade a glazed tile's wear resistance from 1 (walls only) to 5 (heavy commercial). Across our vendor-rated porcelain range, more than 700 products carry PEI 4 and about 160 carry PEI 5, which means the majority of this collection is rated for everything from busy family kitchens to storefronts. Each product page lists its rating in the specifications, so you can match the tile to the traffic it will actually see.

Best Applications for Porcelain Tile

Bathrooms and Showers

Non-porous by the ASTM C373 standard, porcelain is fully rated for wet areas. Use matte or mosaic formats on shower floors and any finish on walls; only the grout needs sealing.

Kitchens and Living Floors

Kitchen porcelain shrugs off dropped pans, pet claws and daily mopping. Large formats keep grout lines to a minimum where crumbs would find them.

Outdoors

Outdoor-rated porcelain and 2cm pavers resist freeze-thaw cycles and never fade in sunlight, making them the low-maintenance alternative to stone patios.

Commercial and High-Traffic Spaces

PEI 4 and 5 rated porcelain serves storefronts, offices and rental units where floors must look the same in year five as day one.

FAQs about Porcelain Tiles

Does porcelain tile need to be sealed?

No. Porcelain absorbs less than 0.5 percent water under the ASTM C373 standard, so the tile itself never needs sealing. Seal only the grout joints once they cure, since grout is the porous part of the installation.

What PEI rating do I need?

PEI 3 suits residential floors with normal traffic, PEI 4 handles busy households and light commercial spaces, and PEI 5 is rated for heavy commercial traffic. Most porcelain in this collection carries PEI 4 or 5; the rating is listed on each product page.

Can porcelain tile be used outside?

Yes. Porcelain's near-zero absorption makes it frost-proof, and grip-finish and 2cm paver formats are made specifically for patios, pool surrounds and exterior steps. It also never fades in sunlight.

Is porcelain tile hard to install?

It is denser than ceramic, so it needs a porcelain-rated polymer-modified thinset and a wet saw with a porcelain blade for cutting. Large formats need a flat substrate and back-buttering. For most installers these are routine requirements rather than obstacles.

What is the difference between glazed and through-body porcelain?

Glazed porcelain carries its design in a fired surface layer, which allows marble, wood and concrete looks. Through-body porcelain runs the same color through the entire tile, so edges and any chips show the same tone. Both share porcelain's density and water resistance.
