Porcelain Tiles

Porcelain tile is a type of ceramic tile made from refined clay and fired at higher temperatures, which makes it denser, stronger, and less porous than standard ceramic. With a water absorption rate of less than 0.5%, it’s ideal for both indoor and outdoor use. Porcelain is highly durable, resistant to scratches, stains, and moisture, making it a long-lasting choice. It comes in glazed and unglazed varieties, often designed to mimic the look of natural materials like stone or wood. Thanks to its toughness and low maintenance, porcelain tile is widely used for floors, walls, and commercial spaces.

Porcelain tiles typically do not require sealing; however, this can depend on the tile’s finish and where it is installed. Glazed porcelain has a built-in protective barrier that makes sealing unnecessary. On the other hand, unglazed or polished porcelain tiles may benefit from a penetrating sealer, especially in high-traffic areas or places prone to spills, as this helps prevent staining. Textured porcelain surfaces are more likely to trap dirt and debris, so sealing can make maintenance easier. Regardless of the tile type, grout lines should always be sealed to protect against moisture and staining.

Porcelain tile can be slippery when wet, but its slip resistance largely depends on the surface finish. Polished or glossy porcelain tends to be more slippery because of its smooth, reflective surface. In contrast, matte, textured, or specially designed slip-resistant porcelain provides better traction, making it a safer choice for wet areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, or outdoor spaces. It's always a good idea to check the tile’s COF (Coefficient of Friction) rating—tiles with higher COF values offer better slip resistance and are safer underfoot.

The easiest way to differentiate between ceramic and porcelain tile is by looking at their water absorption rate and hardness. Porcelain is denser, less porous, and harder than ceramic, making it more suitable for outdoor use and high-traffic areas. It often feels heavier, has a finer, smoother surface, and absorbs less than 0.5% water.

Ceramic tile, on the other hand, is typically lighter, slightly more porous, and commonly has a red or brown clay body. It is better suited for indoor walls and lightly used floors. A quick way to tell them apart is by checking the side or back of the tile—porcelain usually has a uniform color throughout, while ceramic shows a different-colored core.

The best cleaner for porcelain tile in a shower is a mild, pH-neutral solution that’s safe for both the tile and grout. These cleaners—like tile-safe bathroom sprays or diluted dish soap in warm water—effectively remove soap scum without damaging the surface. It’s important to avoid vinegar or acidic cleaners, especially on polished or sealed porcelain, as they can dull the finish over time. Use soft brushes or non-abrasive sponges to prevent scratching the tile. For regular maintenance, a commercial cleaner specifically labeled for porcelain and grout use is a reliable and safe choice.
