About Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tile is kiln-fired clay with a glazed wearing surface, the most approachable tile there is: light to handle, easy to cut, and friendly to first-time installers and budgets alike. Mosaicenter's ceramic range covers glazed subway and wall formats from 3 x 6 to 5 x 5, decorative ceramic hexagons and ceramic subway tile, in colors from glossy whites to matte blacks.

Glazed Ceramic Basics

Seals the Surface

The fired glaze carries the color and closes the face of the tile against moisture and stains. Walls and backsplashes wipe clean with warm water.

Carries the Design

Gloss, satin or matte; solid color or pattern; the glaze is where ceramic gets its personality, including handmade-look edges and undulated faces.

Simplifies the Cut

Ceramic scores and snaps with a manual cutter, no wet saw required for straight cuts. The friendliest material for DIY walls.

Keeps the Budget Honest

The most affordable category in tile, which leaves room in the project for pattern, trim and better fixtures.

Ceramic Colors

Whites

The classic white ceramic wall: bright, timeless and the best-value backsplash in tile.

Greys

Grey ceramic from fog to charcoal gives kitchens a modern neutral that hides waterspots.

Warm Tones

Cream and beige ceramic warm up traditional kitchens and pair with wood and brass.

Statement Colors

Blues, greens and blacks bring saturated, glossy color that porcelain rarely matches.

Best Applications for Ceramic Tile

Backsplashes

The natural home of ceramic. A ceramic backsplash delivers color and gloss where there is splash but no abrasion, at the friendliest price per square foot in tile.

Bathroom and Shower Walls

Glazed ceramic sheds water and soap scum on shower walls and tub surrounds. Pair with a porcelain or mosaic floor rated for wet traffic.

Light-Traffic Floors

In powder rooms, laundries and entryways, PEI 3 rated glazed ceramic floors perform well. For heavy traffic or outdoors, step up to porcelain.

Laundry and Utility Rooms

A few square feet of glazed ceramic above a utility sink or behind laundry machines turns a working room into a finished one at minimal cost.

Installation and Care

Non-Sag Mortar on Walls

A wall-rated, non-sag thinset holds ceramic in place while it cures, keeping courses straight without ledger boards on most jobs.

Seal the Grout

The tile face needs nothing, but cement grout is porous. Seal joints once cured, especially behind ranges and in showers.

Plan the Layout

Center the field on the room's focal wall and keep cut tiles above cabinets and in corners where the eye does not land.

Dry-Lay a Course

Set one row without mortar first to balance cuts at both ends of the wall before committing.

FAQs about Ceramic Tiles

Is ceramic tile waterproof?

The glazed face is water-resistant and sheds splashes, which is why ceramic excels on backsplashes and shower walls. The clay body beneath is more porous than porcelain, so ceramic stays indoors and the grout joints should be sealed.

Can I use ceramic tile on a floor?

Yes, on light-traffic floors like powder rooms and laundries, choosing tiles with a floor-appropriate PEI 3 rating. For busy kitchens, entries or commercial spaces, porcelain's harder body is the better tool.

What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tile?

Both are fired clay, but porcelain is pressed denser and fired hotter until it absorbs under 0.5 percent water, making it suitable for floors and outdoors. Ceramic is lighter, easier to cut and more affordable, best on walls and light floors.

Can I cut ceramic tile without a wet saw?

Usually yes. Standard glazed ceramic scores and snaps cleanly with a manual tile cutter, and nippers handle notches. A wet saw only becomes necessary for thick, dense or large-format pieces.

How do I clean glazed ceramic tile?

Warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner cover almost every situation. Avoid oil soaps and wax products that leave film, and abrasive powders that can dull glossy glazes over time.
