About Glass Tile

Glass tile is kiln-formed silica with zero water absorption, which makes it the one tile material that is completely unaffected by water, pool chemicals and fading. Mosaicenter carries over 250 glass tiles and mosaics, from pool-ready blues and greens to crisp whites, in subway, penny, hexagon and interlocking sheet formats, including recycled-content lines.

Glass Tile Properties

Zero Absorption

Glass takes on no water at all, so it never needs sealing, never harbors mold in its body, and is fully rated for submerged pool use.

Fused Color

The color is fired into or behind the glass. It cannot fade in sunlight or wear off, even in chlorinated water.

Light Transmission

Light passes into the tile and reflects back, a depth no opaque surface matches. Backsplashes read brighter with the same bulbs.

Simple to Keep Bright

A non-abrasive cleaner and soft cloth restore full shine; there is no sealing schedule, ever.

Glass Tile Sizes and Formats

Classic 2 x 6 and glass subway tile bring color to kitchen walls in the most forgiving pattern there is. Sheet-mounted hexagons, chevrons and penny rounds cover curves and shower floors, while interlocking mixed sheets blend glass with stone and metal for texture that ties a room's finishes together.

Glass Tile Colors

Whites

Bright glazed and frosted white glass keeps galley kitchens and small baths feeling open.

Greys and Silvers

Smoky grey glass pairs with stainless and marble looks in modern kitchens.

Ambers and Golds

Warm gold glass glows under pendant lighting, a natural above wood cabinetry.

Blues and Greens

The pool palette: blues and greens that read as water itself, rated for full submersion.

Best Applications for Glass Tile

Pools, Spas and Water Features

Glass is the premium pool finish worldwide because chemistry cannot touch it. Waterline bands, full-pool fields and spa interiors keep their color for decades; verify your setting materials are rated for submerged use.

Pools, Spas and Water Features: Vanguard Penta Bali Stone 12.25 x 12.25 installed

Kitchen Backsplashes

Grease wipes off a glass backsplash with a single pass, and the surface bounces daylight deeper into the room. Glass backsplash tile earns its keep in hardworking kitchens.

Bathroom Walls and Accents

Glass wall tile turns shower niches and feature strips into points of light. Pair a glass accent band with stone field tile for contrast in texture and sheen.

Spa and Steam Rooms

Steam, heat and humidity cannot reach into a material with zero absorption. Glass walls keep spa rooms bright and mold has nowhere to root.

Installation Tips for Glass Tile

White Thinset, Full Coverage

Glass is transparent enough to show what is behind it. Bright white mortar, spread with full coverage and no voids, keeps the face flawless.

Non-Sanded Grout

Protect the polished face by grouting mosaics and closely spaced glass with non-sanded or fine-aggregate grout.

Score, Do Not Chip

Cut glass with a wet saw and a glass blade, or score-and-snap on small formats. Rushed cuts chip the edges.

Grout Gently

Non-sanded grout protects polished faces; strike joints evenly so light plays cleanly across the surface.

FAQs about Glass Tiles

Can glass tile be used in a swimming pool?

Yes. Glass has zero water absorption and its color is fused into the material, so pool chemicals and sunlight cannot degrade it. It is the premium pool finish. Just confirm your thinset and grout are rated for submerged use.

Does glass tile need to be sealed?

Never. Glass is completely non-porous. Only the grout joints benefit from sealing. Day to day, any non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth keep it bright.

Is glass tile suitable for floors?

Selectively. Textured and small-format glass mosaics with dense grout lines can serve light-traffic and shower floors, but polished glass is slippery when wet and shows scratches from grit, so most glass belongs on walls, backsplashes and pools.

Why does my glass tile look darker after installation?

Glass shows the mortar behind it. If the thinset was grey or trowel ridges were left uncombed, they read through the tile. This is why glass must always be set in bright white thinset with full, flat coverage.

Are recycled glass tiles as durable as regular glass?

Yes. Recycled-content glass is remelted and fired the same way, with the same zero absorption and fused color. It behaves identically in pools, backsplashes and showers.
