What Quartzite Is
Quartzite starts as sandstone. Heat and pressure deep in the earth fuse the quartz grains together until the rock recrystallises into a single dense mass, and the result is harder than granite — around 7 on the Mohs scale, where marble sits near 3. That hardness is the whole reason to specify it: quartzite resists scratching and etching in places where a softer stone would show every knock.
It is worth being precise about the name, because three different materials get confused. Quartzite is a natural stone, quarried and cut. Quartz worktops are a manufactured product, ground stone bound in resin. Quartz itself is the mineral both contain. Only the first is what this page sells.
Ledger Panels and Stacked Stone
Most quartzite here is supplied as ledger panel — strips of stone of varying thickness bonded to a backing so a whole section of dry-stacked wall installs as one piece. It is the fastest way to get a real stone feature wall, and the depth variation is what stops it looking like a printed tile. Typical uses are a fireplace surround, a feature wall behind a bed or television, a kitchen island front, or an exterior facade.
Panels come in flat and dimensional profiles. Flat gives a tighter, more contemporary face; dimensional projects further and throws much stronger shadow, which reads better at a distance or under a wash of light.
Colours
Golden and honey tones dominate, from warm amber through to the pale sand of Golden White. Greys run from soft silver to Coal Canyon, which is close to charcoal, and Sierra Blue brings a cooler blue-grey. Because quartzite is a natural stone, no two panels repeat — order the whole job at once and dry-lay a few panels together before fixing so the variation distributes evenly.
Where It Works
- Fireplace surrounds — quartzite is dimensionally stable under heat, and dimensional panels catch firelight well.
- Feature walls — interior or exterior; the hardness means it shrugs off weather.
- Backsplashes — harder and less porous than marble, so it stands up to a working kitchen. Seal it, as with any natural stone.
- Floors — excellent wear resistance, but check the finish for slip rating before using it in a wet area.
- Exteriors and water features — low absorption and frost tolerance make it a common choice around pools and on garden walls.
