Planning a Wall, Course by Course
Wall tile succeeds or fails at the planning stage, before a single piece is set. Start by deciding where the tile stops: full height to the ceiling reads architectural and suits showers and feature walls, while a wainscot ending at 36 to 42 inches suits baths, mudrooms, and dining rooms and cuts material cost roughly in half. Whatever the height, finish the top course deliberately, with a pencil liner, a quarter round like the Crema Marfil trim in this collection, or a flat stone border; a raw cut edge at eye level is the detail that makes a good wall look unfinished. Then plan the courses from the most visible corner outward so cut pieces land where furniture and shadows hide them. A wall drawn on paper for ten minutes installs better than one improvised on the day.

Light Changes Everything on a Vertical Surface
A wall meets light differently than a floor. It catches windows and fixtures at a raking angle, which makes surface finish the loudest choice you will make. Polished marble on a wall doubles the room's light and shows every wave in the substrate; honed and tumbled surfaces swallow glare and forgive an old wall's imperfections. If a wall gets strong side light from a window, favor matte finishes or deliberately handmade texture, because raking light exaggerates any unevenness. In dim rooms, do the opposite: a polished or glass surface earns its keep bouncing what little light exists. Sample two finishes of the same stone on the actual wall for a day before ordering; the difference between noon and evening will usually make the decision for you.
Ordering a Wall Right the First Time
Wall jobs are the easiest to underorder because people measure the rectangle and forget the interruptions. Measure the full wall, subtract windows and doors at only half their area since their perimeters eat cut pieces, then add ten percent for waste and another course worth if the design might grow. Order trim in the same purchase, from the same lot, and keep the leftover box; a matching repair piece five years from now is worth far more than the return credit. If two walls in different rooms will share a stone, buy both now, because lot to lot variation in natural marble is real and permanent. The unglamorous arithmetic at ordering time is what makes the finished wall look effortless.
